Other Subjects

Gilbert traveled to Japan, where he painted a delicate portayal of the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Traveling in the United States, he expanded his range of styles with atmospheric portrayals of San Francisco and New York City landscapes. Locally, he was renowned for his whimsical cartoon paintings of the courtship of birds. All of these subjects reflect a mind that was always playful and open to new ideas.
