Oaxaca, from an old Aztec word meaning "among the huaje trees", is the capital of the southern Mexican state of the same name, and was a favorite place Gilbert often visited. Famous for its month-long Guelaguetza festival, it contains many ancient structures built from a native green stone, from which the city derives its other name, la Verde Antequera. Often it is the quiet places that reveal the soul of a city, and here the old buildings speak softly in a mingling of past and present.
This watercolor is a perspective of a residential view seen in another of his watercolors, Oaxaca Mission with Women In Street.
