The unique green bark of the palo verde is yet another hue of the many greens that are a part of our beautiful desert palette. Palo verde means “green pole”, and the tree is actually of the pea family. Its green bark actually carries on photosynthesis, which allows it to survive even when it has shed its leaves in very hot months. It used to be an important food tree for native americans in our region.
Here a mature palo verde dances with the desert sky as shaded light plays across the distant mountains.
